If you think Chicago has too many Irish bars, you might have a point. But the folks at Atlantic Bar and Grill have decided that another one is okay, so long as you get specific. This one, an Irish
fishing bar, is a little more coastal than the Dublin-esque, Joycean pubs you might be used to.
Upon entering, you're greeted by a large fishing net hanging above some of the bigger tables in the front room. The pinkish-brown walls come bedecked in photos of the Irish coast (complete with sheep), countered by dark-wood tables that assist in the creation of Atlantic's dim, cozy feel. Through a small hallway is another larger room with a pool table and second bar designed to host private parties. The expected Guinness paraphernalia is plentiful, but don't worry about being transported to another land—Miller Lite banners advertising drink specials and upcoming musical acts remind you where you are.
Aside from the St. James's Gate-made beers you'd expect, there are a handful of imports and microbrews on tap (more beer in the bottle), and the liquor selection is pretty solid. The food is a little less seafood-oriented than one might expect, with just a few fish options (salmon, cod, crab cakes). The rest of the menu is bar grub, but served a notch or two above the average corner spot. The prices are a little steeper than some places, too, but the daily food specials make things easier on the pocketbook. Come in on the weekends and you'll be treated to live music and DJs, plus a bigger crowd (the weekdays aren't slow, but they're a little quieter). You may not be whisked away to the Irish coast, but the Atlantic does provide something a little different.
