KEEN Chicago

Whether you're recently unemployed or just looking for a productive way to spend your weekends (and no, breaking the record for "most Jager bombs consumed" doesn't count), these volunteer-based organizations will help you keep busy and make a difference.

Howard Brown
Since its inception in 1974, Howard Brown has become one of the nation’s largest LGBT organizations. By promoting the well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people through countless healthcare and wellness programs—including clinical, educational, social service and research activities—the agency is able to help more than 28,000 adults and youths each year. There are numerous opportunities for volunteering, including helping out at one of Howard Brown's three Brown Elephant resale shops (Lakeview, Andersonville and Oak Park), the health and research center (Uptown) or the Broadway Youth Center. The agency also hosts a number of special events each year at which volunteers are needed. Current opportunities can be found on the Howard Brown website.

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum
This is the ideal place to spend a little extra time if you're into science and nature. It isn't surprising that the museum draws in more than 240 volunteers each year, each of whom help to restore the prairie, interact with visitors, handle live animals and assist with countless public programs. In 2008 alone, Peggy Notebaert's volunteers clocked in more than 8,000 hours of their time. Perhaps it has something to do with the diverse opportunities, including maintaining the museum's native gardens, preserving and documenting scientific collections and caring for the live animals. To register, contact the Volunteer and Intern Coordinator at (773) 755-5142 or volunteer@naturemuseum.org.

KEEN Chicago
This national nonprofit organization has only been around since 2005, but it already boasts a faithful following of volunteers. KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) is a great opportunity for energetic types who enjoy working with disabled children. You don't need any previous experience to get started, and you don't have to be an all-star athlete, either. The organization provides training before each session, so you'll know exactly how to coach your little athlete. The one-on-one recreational, non-competitive activities have proven successful in helping KEEN's kids gain self-esteem, confidence, skills and talent. For more information, or to register as a volunteer, head to the KEEN website.

Asian Youth Services
Got some mad math skills? Speak Spanish fluently? Do you specialize in science, or would you call yourself a history buff? Whatever your academic background, Asian Youth Services will match you with a child who needs your help. Located in Uptown, the after-school tutoring program helps students from ages 5-20, who come from families with no formal schooling. The drop-in center, open six days a week, allows children to gain academic skills while hanging out in a comfortable environment. After registering, you'll be partnered up with a child and expected to volunteer once a week for tutoring and mentoring. If behind-the-scenes action sounds more appealing, AYS is also seeking volunteers to help with grant writing and creative programming. Check out the AYS website for more info.

Mercy Home for Boys and Girls’ Friends First mentoring program
Mercy Home for Boys and Girls
Mercy Home for Boys and Girls' Friends First mentoring program is the perfect place to spend your extra time while helping out at-risk kids. Once you sign up, the facility will match you with a child who needs a positive adult in his or her life. All that's required from you is a positive attitude and the energy to hang out for a few hours and partake in activities like playing sports, visiting parks, zoos and museums. If you're at a loss for how to entertain your little pal, Mercy Home also hosts group events. As a mentor, you'll receive ongoing support and encouragement through direct monthly contact with staff members. You'll also be notified regularly about fun, free things to do in the city and receive opportunities to connect with other mentors in the program. To sign up, call (312) 738-7552 or apply online.
